This is likely the Gilliflower "Gilliflower" Jefferson found suitable for naturalizing in "the open ground on the west" in 1771, although the garden carnation was also called by this name. The Elizabethans called them "Stockgilliflowers" for their "stock" or stem and for their carnation, or gilliflower-like, fragrance.
