Also known as Mad Dog Plant for its reputation in treating "mad-dog bites," Narrow-leaved Coneflower is, like its broad-leaved cousin, Purple Coneflower (E. purpurea), native to the Midwestern United States from Minnesota to Texas. Although the more common Purple Coneflower (E. purpurea) was introduced into Europe by 1699, this species first recorded for science during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Latin name, echinos, meaning hedge-hog, refers to the bristly cone of disk florets in the center of the large composite flower.
