Mark your calendars!  The 4th Annual Heritage Harvest Festival takes place September 10-11 at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and we hope you’ll join us.

During his lifetime, Thomas Jefferson championed locally grown vegetable cuisine, plant propagation and sustainable agriculture so it’s only fitting that this legacy be celebrated at the very place where he conducted so much of his research and experimentation.  This family-oriented festival, hosted by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation in partnership with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, offers fun, hands-on educational programs, local food tastings, workshops and demonstrations. Sustainable agriculture experts and Master Gardeners from all over the country will be on hand to share their Southern Exposure Seed Exchange logotalents and expertise.  You will also enjoy interpretive walks, a wide variety of garden tours and live cooking demonstrations.  Workshop topics include seed saving, sustainable agriculture, edible landscaping, container gardening, green options for pest control, home grown hops, and more.  Favorite speakers include William Woys Weaver; “Hoppin’” John Taylor; Patti Moreno, the Garden Girl; Barbara Pleasant; and local favorite, Peter Hatch, to name just a few. Sharon Astyk, author of the Jefferson-inspired, A Nation of Farmers, will be a new addition to the lineup of speakers this year.

Don’t miss the Historic Plants Symposium (pdf. flyer) on Friday, September 10.  This year’s event, “Come to the Table – Historic Plants in the Kitchen,” will focus on the garden’s harvest in early American recipes from a regional perspective.  Monticello’s Leni Sorenson will discuss African American cooking, and Rosalind Creasy, the pioneering author of The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping, will share her vast knowledge of cooking and gardening during an informative discussion, followed by a specially prepared dinner.
